he Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology grew out of the Cenozoic Research Laboratory that was established as a subsidiary research unit of the Geological Survey of China in 1929. In 1949, the Chinese Academy-of Sciences set upa new laboratory of Vertebrate Paleontology, which gave rise to the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology ( IVPP ) in 1960. IVPP became the first research institute dedicated to excavations, study and collection of vertebrate fossils in China.

The permanent exhibitions displays skeletons of best known Chinese dinosaurs such as Lufengosaurus, Monolophosaurus, Sinraptor, Bellosaurus, Mamenchisaurus, Huayangosaurus, Psittacosaurus, Archeaoceratops , Probactrosaurus, Tsintaosaurus and others.
