The ancestors of modern amphibians

By the time the Carboniferous period was under way, the group that we loosely call the amphibians had developed into a wide range of animals. Many had adapted well to their life on land, and indeed the thick deltaic forests of the time supported a wealth of invertebrate life that acted as a food source, but strangely some abandoned this lifestyle and returned to the water. Eucritta
By early in Carboniferous times the tctrapods had diverged one route leading to the teninospondyls, the ancestors of modern amphibians, and another leading to the amniotes, those animals that laid hard- shelled eggs. The fact that FMcritta is known from several specimens means that we can sec how the animal grew throughout life. In particular the shoulder girdle became more sturdy as it grew, probably an adaptation to land-locomotion. Walking Dinosaur Costume
Features: At the time Eucntta existed the divergence between temnospondyls and amruotes had not really established itself. This animal, known from about five specimens, seems to show features of both. It seems to be very close to the most primitive of the temnospondyl amphibians in the characters of the skull. However, there is a palate on the roof of the mouth that amphibians tend to lack. The legs are spread wide and the feet have five toes.
