More Ichithyosaurs

Early in their evolution the ichthyosaurs spread across the world-embracing ocean of Panthalassa9 hunting in the shelf seas around the supercontinent of Pangaea. At this time they tended to be quite eellike with straight tails, and had not evolved the streamlined fish shape and shark-like fins that was tobecome so distinctive in later times. realistic dinosaur costume

Barracudasaurus

Barracudasaurus

Remains of this animal found in 1965 were named Mixosaurus maotaiensis. More complete remains were found in 2005 and these show it to have been a different genus altogether. The discovery suggests that the mixosaur family may have originated in the eastern waters of the Tethys Ocean and spread west rather than the otherway around as had originally been thought.

Features: The new specimens consist of two skulls and a shoulder girdle with attached front paddles. These show Barracudasaurus to be sufficiently different from Mixosaurus as to represent a completely new genus. The differences are in the teeth. There is onty one row of teeth in each lower jaw. and those at the back are wide, blunt and rounded, presumably indicating a different diet from other mixosaurids. The skull is longer behind the eye socket than that of other mixosaurids.
