The anapsids were a group of reptiles that had no openings in their heads, aside from the eye sockets and the nostrils. Nevertheless one group, the millcrettids, did have a pair of openings behind the eyes, although the rest of the skull was distinctly anapsid. These openings evolved independently.

Features: Milleretta has a pair of openings in the skull behind the eyes. This led to speculation that it represented a stage in the evolution of one of the other reptile lines, but this is not now thought to be the case. A concave area in the back of the skull suggests the presence of an eardrum and complex hearing system. The rest of the animal is built like other primitive reptiles – an agile little insect-eater, just like a modern lizard.
Another group of early amniotes were the captorhinids. These were among the most primitive of the cureptilia (the”true reptiles” as opposed to the parareptilia, the “almost reptiles”). Features: The mam species. C. aguti. has multiple tooth rows giving a broad insect-grinding surface, as had its relative Labidosaurus, and extra cheek teeth, while C. laticeps has the cheek teeth but only a single tooth row. The articulation of the hind limb, especially in the bone structure of the ankle, shows that Captorhinus must have moved like a modern lizard. The structure of the forelimb is quite loose, allowing a great deal of movement.
