The Turpan Basin is a small anrl narrow intermountain basin that lies southeast to the Tienshan Mountains ( 42.45 ~ 43.12 N; 89.05 ~ 91.36 E ) . These non-marine deposits contain red, gray, light yellow muddy sandstones, pure sandstone, and siltstonesthat are called the “Flaming Mountains” by Chinese. This site has yielded many invertebrate and vertebrate fossils ( Dong, 1992 ) .

 

The Jurassic deposits of the Turpan Basin are divided into three formations as follows: Qikatai, Qigu, and Karaza.
